For a NL Holdem player who wants to learn PLO - what are the good beginner books or sources out there? Feel like starting from scratch at this game and want to develop a good foundation.
Also, any feeling as to where the easiest money is?....PLO tournaments, ring games, sng's?
Thanks

I have no clue about sngs, but I know PLO cash and mtts are soft at the low stakes. Currently though, the new buyin changes on stars and ftp have screwed up the games, as you are almmost forced to play 40bb max if you want to play against bad players. That being said, the game is still soft. There is a 2+2 book on PLO. Check it out.

my 2 cents worth, AAxx hands are never a much of a favourite over most random hands at full tables. Don't go stacking off multiway PF, unless you can get it HU or its short handed. Bigger pairs are better short handed.
PLO is a game of draws, and redraws. The more people in the pot, the more draws that are out there.
Position is probably more important than NLH.
Super System 2 does has a good PLO section.
'Just received my FTT T-Shirt (prize from FTT League)and I can say
it is nicer than I expected - Dark Green w/White FTT logo(incl. picture of fish, turn, dollar sign).
I would even buy these if they were for sale.
Just hope I don't lose it in my next poker game.
Thanks JL!

Im glad you liked it. If you want more, I can have them shipped to you for $15 each in the USA and $25 overseas. Email me at support if intrested
One question I always had since I started watching the WPT on TV years ago and since then is the number of players you see who claim to be professional poker players.Watching the WSOP on ESPN,WPT,et. there is always a number of pro players.Reading about players on the internet and there is a ton more.
How can the poker economy support these players? Is there that much money moving around?
If someone is playing $10-20 NL cash games for a living - who are the people playing those stakes and losing?
Are there really that many pro players as I am led to believe?

There are a lot of pros but most make only around $30k/yr or less. It isnt that hard to grind out $3000/month playing low stakes and putting in lots of hours. At the higher limits, there are a few weak players that play but usually what happenes is 5 good players play and 1 bad player plays, who loses something like 2/3 of the time. The good players chop that money up in the long run, which is how they make it. If you win 1/5th of a $5000 buyin every 2 hours, you can see how that will make you a lot of money.

Also... When I first started playing on stars 1.5 years ago the numbers have gone from like 130,000 in peak times to 260,000 in peak times. There are ALOT of donks that lose $1 a game on sngs etc. I suggest when you next play a sng, sharkscope every single player and have a look at the figures you will be amazed.
There's a lot of young players (20-25 yrs old) out there playing at extremely high stakes. I'm always curious how they have the bankrolls to play so high at such a young age.
Did they grind up from a small stake ($100-500)? Did they take down a big tournament?
How did you do it Jonathan? Did you have an early score or grind the cash games? If so, what stakes were you playing early on? How long did it take before you were playing the highest levels?
Thanks

Basically all the young poker players started with very little and grinded it up. Most of them hit a big tournament right off the bat and then have like $5000 to work with. I wasnt lucky enough to knock off a tournament. I started with $50 playing $.5/$1 limit. I put in lots of hours and got to $30/60, which I couldnt beat. I then moved to sngs and made around $20,000 per month for a few years playing those. When I turned 21, I started playing live tournaments with around a $300,000 bankroll and went from there. Also, a lot of young guys have backers for the biggest events. Even if you have a huge bankroll, it probably isnt wise to play $25,000 events on a $1,000,000 bankroll.

Thanks Jonathan. Great information.
20K per month playing sngs is great! Can that win rate be achieved playing the 45 and 180-mans? If so, what kind of stake and volume?
Can a good player make 100K (or more) per year playing the $12 buy-in multi-table sngs? Or do they need to be playing $27 or $60 buy-ins?

partyhair

Travis, that rate cannot be maintained playing the 180s and 45s unless you play like 300 games a day. Last year I made over 100k playing mostly sngs ranging from $12 - $60 however most of my money came from the $12 and Mtts I played. If you want to make alot of money full time I suggest you play about 100 games a day, 5 days a week.
Despite having good results I dont consider my bankroll of being worthy of playing $500 games or higher therefor I will be looking for a backer to put me in 109s+ online as a break into MTTs for the first time despite showing 30,000 profit off 1,200 MTTs.
hi, i am gettin totally killed in the 18 m sngs, just dunno what the hell is goin on, i play and loose and loose...
played a 16$ sng a few min ago, and got bubbled there...i made some plays, i think i have to...do u also watch hh for members?
would be thankfull for your help. i really think about quitting, i don't understand what i am doing totally wrong there...

hi ftt,
i remember a very good video series on another coaching site.
the coach startet to play cashgames from 0,05/0,10 and moved up in limits in the next vid.
till he got to 10/20 i think.
at first he talked about the adjustments he has to make.
i think for sngs this would be also a very good idea.
starting at the 1,10 level, playing one 18 men, one 45 men and one 90 men or something like that.
and a 2,20 180 men....

Hey guys,
I am constantly looking for ways to improve the site and am trying my best to make the site the best it can be. If anyone has any suggestions, please post them here and I will get right to making them a reality. Thanks.

I think a hand replayer directly on the site would be great.
Smart implemented so that u can post a link to the forum and anyone who clicks it would watch the hand unfold with animation and all.
hi ftt,
i would like to know how you plan your day as a professional pokerplayer??
i am starting to win enough to be able to live from poker, online i try to make about 100$ a day and i mainly play live by now, but i would love to spend more time playing online.
the problem i have with that is that i thing i am gettin lazy. because, when i start to grind 4-5 hrs, i mostly dont stop, or i make a break of about an hr to eat something, and then go on and play. but i seem to have less time to work out, to go out with friends, and stuff like that.
what are yyour thoughts on that? is planing your day good?
for example as if u had a regular job:
wake up 8:30
breakfast
then starting the day at 9:30 till 12:30 then eat something and relax a bit, next session 13:30. end the day 18:00 and work out a bit...#just as an example, i just really don't know how to get poker into my live. because sitting the whole day infront of your computer and not doing a bit for your health is not good in the long run.
what do you do to not let poker become everything in your life?
i think this is also a big part we all need to learn from pros, not only how to play the game...
thanks for your thoughts
hi ftt,

I will probably go and play the UKIPT in Nottingham. Besides that I will try to qualify for a NAPT event in the late summer/fall. Dont know the schedule yet for that tour. WSOP will have to wait untill next year :( Anyone else have plans to play in live tourneys this year??

Are there any new video's coming? Also, would it be possible to put in the date of release for their movies. I find it kinda handy and not everybody does it. Would be appreciated.

Hello, I post a new video every other day. On the bottom right hand side of the main page is a list of the most recently uploaded videos. I will work on getting the dates on each video. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi! I had a idea that floattheturn should have a challenge topic in forum (it can stay also here in other topic ) Everybody can put his challenge here/there (personal or a bet for all) and a link to his blog in floattheturn to keep everybody posted. Then you can motivate yourself or make nice side bets... My Challenge for myself. I do it because I need to put the volume in. *I will play 1275 SNG in 10 days at PS 12$ 45 man , 12$ 180 man and 3.3$ +R 180 man (15-20 tabling) *I will move down if I lose 100 buy inīs and i will stop if I have major network problems ( yesterday twice was sitting out 15 table each time). Then i will call somebody to get a better connection and start all over again. Keep You posted Day by Day in my blog here. ( Sry. if there are mistakes or funny sentences, English is not my native language ) mahoumori

Partyhair- Thats a huge downswing. Do you feel you were either not playing your best, playing too many tables, or just losing several key flips? I've had my share lately too of running awful so I'm just wondering what you think has gone wrong in your game? I know when going over some of my own HHs I've seen a combination of things that I could not of avoided but a few spots where I needed to either shove or not make a shove but it seems to me in the games I'm playing (mostly $12-27 45/180 mans) the players are making much wider calls then they used to in spots they probably shouldn't call but do anyways. I've also been so fortunate to make several shoves in MP to LP only to run into monsters like it's my job.

So played about 1000 SNG in 10 days and made really nice profit 3000 $. Doubled my Bankroll in 10 days. Amazing. What I learned : You have to play with a good feeling and enjoy poker. If you are feeling bad or the room is too warm or you have a shitty chair then change that or do something else. If you have a good feeling then You don't mind the downswing, you know its part of the game. Especially when in the 180 man you can get with two winnings all your 100 buy-in downswing back. I will play about 3000 180 man so I have a better picture of my play. Good luck all of you!!! Ty all

mahoumori, congrats on setting yourself goals, its very important. you have reminded me of what I am yet to do this year which is get my mentaility good and set myself small goals on a week by week basis.. We can only really set volume goals week by week and so far ive been doing 100 games a day across fulltilt and stars running pretty badly. Seeing as I still have 13k online after a 400-500 buyin downswing I may very well be joining you on the easy lowstake games for a couple weeks to build my confidence back a bit! Good luck

I did see you in one of my games on fulltilt today partyhair =D If you have that same name at full tilt anyways. I think you shoved QJ on cut off i reshoved button aq and bb picked up ak and beat us both!! Anyways I set a goal for myself for this year to turn an initial $0 investment into $20k, starting with a stake. I am over 13k in profit on the year on sharkscope after today since January 4th. Only made about 10-11k though since i split early profits during stake. But I am halfway to my goal and it is still January!! I am really excited about it and hope I can keep it up =D

Ha ha sort of funny we both remember the hand exactly... I know i was probably playing 16 tables and guessing you to be as well
Hey JL - My poker experience is playing mostly sngs for a few short yrs. I have about 3K sngs under my belt - all turbo (small stakes $15) with some profit. While I can improve some more I sort of realize that I really don't know how to play "poker". SNG play - tight early then shove, shove, shove is systematic...not much thinking. When I read discussions about cash game hands they are talking levels above me.I don't think about hands that way. Its all preflop. I don't play cash now, maybe in the future. I'm trying MTTs a lot more -looking for a big hit - but wonder why I have a big hole in my poker education. Since you were a big SNG player does this sound familiar? Hope you can show me a path to being a complete player. Thanks for your time.
1
JonathanLittle
It does sound very fimiliar to me. I suggest everyone play small stake cash games as well as heads up sngs so you are forced to constantly be in tough spots. Please know you can not play a mtt like a sng. If you play $15 sngs, maybe try playing some $.05/.10 cash. It doesnt have to be for a ton of money. Just play and figure out that tptk isnt a hand you always want to get all the money in. Good luck.
2
partyhair
I think as poker players we are better off knowing as much about the game as possible. Being profitable in cash will often help you in the 1st level or 2nd level of blinds in a sng and go, but that is about it. It will help you much more in non turbo games. I reckon that you should just experiment at 5c/10c playing tight with your hands that play well (pockets, suited connectors etc) just to get a feel for deepstack a bit. You wont need to be beating 1/2 or anything just understand the basics.
3
DutchMart
Dont really agree here. Off course cash is good to practice how to play a hand out, but its not really comparable to SNG play. Especially because there isn't that much flop play. However, you would be amazed as to how much thinking there goes into when to shove or fold. Take into consideration ICM, stack seizes, FE and player adjustiments its not a none skill game by far. I dont think its a coincidence that former SNG players are the ones bashing up the FT's at the bigger live and online tourneys. Its an essential skill that will bring you a good ROI and $ if you stick to SNG's as a recreational reg, but also will prove invaluable when you move over to playing mtt's.
Please post in this thread to advise what Live events you will be attending over the coming months. If there is a group of players/trainers attending we should do our best to meet up and have some poker chat on the road. Thanks Partyhair

I will be in Vegas for the Bellagio WPT event in a week as well as the Caesars event right after that. From there, I maaaay go to the horseshow in Indiana for a circuit event or maybe Lake Tahoe for their circuit event. I should also be in Vegas for Venetian's deep stacked main event. In December, I will be at Bellagios WPT event. There is lots going on in Vegas right about now. In Jan, I am most likely going to PCA, although I think it is sick overpriced there. I will probably fly straight to Beau Rivage after that for their WPT. From there, I have no clue. Good luck to everyone.

Hi, Wes I am also living on the north side so it sound like you are the ideal type of person I am looking for. I am currently training my first student which should take about 2 weeks before he is an active grinder before I will have time to fit you in. But maybe there is a chance we can meet up for lunch and have a little chat. Partyhair

Hey Partyhair. I was reading the staking post but can't make a comment on that. Where in Brisbane do you live? I have lived in Mt Isa nearly 2 years now, working underground in the mines but my family lives in Brisbane on the northside. I had to get out of there, the traffic was becoming a joke and there is a lot more money to be made working up here. I have plenty of free time as well, working a 4on/4off roster. Beats working a normal week, plus Saturdays most of the time. cya, Wes.

I'll be playing a 330 / $450 live tournament at my local Casino this friday. Bit of a turbo structure but looks like good fun. 220 entrants so with around a $20.000 top prize its worth giving a shot.

hey partyhair, just wondering are you still doing training for people in Brisbane? Im interested, I have made a living playing poker for the past year, but only playing live cash games at the casino, i really wanna improve my online game, It beats driving to the casino everyday..thanks..Mark ..
Just a tip I thought I'd add here. Pokerstars was really lagging a lot lately by itself for me and not just the server being overloaded so I went and searched around to find this program over on 2+2.. It works, and loads a much smaller memory stamp making pokerstars client run smoother by converting your note file to a smaller size. http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/48/computer-technical-help/pokerstars-client-using-877mb-ram-679213/ Anyway, if you are taking lots of notes like you should then you might run into this issue or might want to just do it anyway to try to avoid it.
Hey I just watched the new video put up by Jonathan Little. You said feel free to send in any hand histories if we'd like a review, where exactly do we send it? Support@floattheturn.com? Also I would be willing to play up to 16 tables at full tilt of 45 mans or 45/90 mans. I set a goal for myself to make 20k this year as fast as possible(2-3 months would be nice) with $0's invested(started with a stake). Have gotten my bankroll up to 3200 on ft(-600 i cashed out) and 400 on stars. I have recorded myself with Camtasia before and watched myself playing. It would be really nice if I could play a session and get that reviewed. I think it would be beneficial for members on here as well. Is this a possibility? If so just tell me what I need to do. Thanks =D
How often do the new videos come out here? Do they come out during a certain day of the week or just whenever? And is there going to be a part 2 to ibluffheaps 45 person sng video?
Hey I was just curious about your new course. I'll probably end up getting it eventually anyways... but just thought I would ask how helpful it will be. I have watched probably a thousand instructional videos over the past years by various instructors. Your course looks like a 9 video series. I know it doesn't cost very much, just wondering if there is a lot of different material covered that I may not know much about already and what differs about it than say all the videos on this site/many other sites i have already seen so many of. Thanks =D

The jonathanlittlesecrets.com course is basically just a recording of me playing 180 person sngs for 8 hours. I ended up winning something silly like $1800 over the 8 hours, so it was a great session. If you have watched all the videos here though, you probably wont gain too much from it. I am a great salesman.

Ha ha yeah that's what I was thinking thanks. Just trying to get some residual income coming in now? =D I have thought about making something like that, not necessarily for poker but who knows. Don't have big winnings to back it up like some people though! How are sales going on that?

I will buy the course for sure as soon as i build a nice fat bankroll. Even though i have watched a ton of videos on FTT i still think it will be a good investment since the more videos i watch and the more i play things start to become second nature to me.
